Almost every “the link will not work” report comes down to one of four causes, and three of them are fixable in a few minutes. The fourth is not fixable at all, and knowing which one you have saves an afternoon.

1. The version wall — the one with no fix
3ds Max can read Revit files from its own year release and the three before it. It cannot read a Revit file newer than itself, ever, and no setting changes that.
This is the cause behind most “3ds Max 2024 failed to link” reports, because the model has usually been upgraded on the BIM side without the visualisation team being told.
Worth knowing before you spend an hour on it: matching years is not always enough either. A documented case has 3ds Max 2025.3.6 refusing files from Revit 2025.4.5, because the point release is read as a 2026 file.

2. “Autodesk Revit Interoperability for 3ds Max is not installed”
3ds Max does not read .rvt by itself. It ships a separate component, Autodesk Revit Interoperability, and the link fails when that component is missing or does not match the Revit release involved.
It is a genuine install problem rather than a file problem, and it is worth ruling out early because the message sounds more serious than it is. Reinstalling or repairing the component through the Autodesk installer resolves it. If the message returns after a Revit upgrade, the component is present but built for the wrong release, which puts you back at cause 1.
3. Cloud models and the wrong view
Two conditions produce a failure that looks like corruption and is not.

4. It is not frozen. It is working.
The most common report in this group is not an error at all. 3ds Max stops responding while linking a large Revit model, and it gets reported as a freeze.
Autodesk documents that on a large model with a lot of metadata and geometry, the import can take hours. The application is single-threaded through that operation and does not paint a progress bar you can trust.
The published advice for making it tractable is worth reading carefully, because of what it asks you to give up:

Every one of those makes the transfer smaller rather than faster. That is the shape of the problem: the route is expensive per element, so the advice is to move fewer elements.
Where these four causes actually come from
Three of the four are consequences of one design decision: the link requires 3ds Max to parse Revit's native format directly. That is why a version-locked component sits in the middle, why a newer file cannot be read, and why the cost scales with everything in the model rather than with what changed.
